Between me and my husband we have owned more gizmos over the years than I care to count, including GPS units, iPods (classic & touch), etc. I love Amazon's kindel, it's by far the coolest toy I got. Why? Because I was very happy to discover just how well-designed and fun it was and how simple it was to use . Make sure you accuire the pouch though as it will get scratched pretty easily.

I am a huge fan also, mostly because I love the free razor/$ razorblades business model.
Personally, it solves the problem of having to roll over while reading in bed, which I view to be a key benefit, in addition to the absolute flexibility/portability reference above. Need more titles, however.

Congratulations, I got here via a Google Alert for blogs talking about the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award!

But I'm very interested in the Kindle, too, so it was a happy read nonetheless.

As you point out one of the neatest things about Kindle is that they put a cell phone 'modem' in the eReader, you can go the other way also and put an eReader in a cell phone. Most modern cell phones can run java programs, http://www.booksinmyphone.com has packaged up hundreds of give away titles so they will run on cell phones.

Cell phones are much smaller than a regular eReader, this actually has an upside - ultra portability. Most people carry their phones everywhere, now they can carry books everywhere without even thinking about it. The screen size does mean that it's only really good for reading novels and general prose - but that's what I read most for fun anyway.

I've had my Kindle since Dec. 4th, and am well satisfied with it. I fully knew I was buying a new Ver. 1 of an entirely new product, and had no unrealistic expectations. As such I am very pleased indeed. I cannot imagine now NOT having my Kindle, and I take it everywhere I go -- to the John, to Bed, when I drive somewhere, when I eat out, literally everywhere. When I can find scraps of time to read, I can, and do. But I could never do that before.
